Black mold in AC causing stuffy nose: clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black speckles around one of the bedroom vents and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose for the past couple of weeks. It's a newer building in Jumeirah Village Circle, but the room always feels damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

Black speckles around an AC vent combined with a stuffy nose and a damp room are strong indicators of a mold issue, likely due to condensation in the ductwork. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates significant moisture, especially if the unit's drain line is partially blocked or insulation is inadequate.

While a surface wipe with a diluted bleach solution might remove visible spots at the vent, it won't address the root cause inside the ducts or the evaporator coil. Incomplete cleaning can aerosolize spores, temporarily worsening symptoms. For a localized issue, a thorough DIY cleaning might suffice, but your persistent symptoms suggest a deeper problem.

Given the health symptoms and the dampness you describe, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use cameras to inspect ductwork and identify the moisture source. Reputable services in Dubai should provide before-and-after evidence of contamination levels, often through lab analysis, to verify the cleanup's effectiveness. For rental properties, document the issue and request your landlord address it, as they are typically responsible for maintaining AC systems.
