Black mold in AC: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for a couple of months now. I finally pulled the filter out last weekend and the inside of the unit and the walls around it are covered in black and greenish spots. I'm pretty handy, but I'm worried about it being a bigger issue inside the ducts that I can't see. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach solution, or should I just call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described – a persistent damp smell and visible black/greenish microbial growth inside the unit and on surrounding walls – this is a clear indicator of a significant mold contamination. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create constant condensation, this is a common but serious issue.
While you may be handy, a DIY approach with a bleach solution is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, does not address the root moisture problem, and can release harmful spores into the air, potentially worsening indoor air quality and causing health issues. More critically, the contamination you see is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The real concern is the growth within the ductwork and evaporator coils, which you cannot properly assess or remediate without specialized equipment. According to UAE health and safety guidelines, improper handling of mold can violate indoor air quality standards. A professional inspection is not just recommended; it is essential. Our certified technicians use borescopes to inspect deep within ducts, moisture meters to identify hidden condensation sources, and air sampling to determine spore count levels. This comprehensive assessment is crucial to develop an effective remediation plan that addresses the entire system, not just visible surfaces. For a situation like this in JVC, I advise against DIY.
