Black mold in AC: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks. I just pulled the filter out and the entire plastic housing behind it is covered in a black, fuzzy patch. With how humid it’s been lately, should I be calling a professional cleaner tomorrow, or is this something I can handle myself with a vinegar spray?

The black, fuzzy growth you've described is almost certainly Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as black mold, a serious health hazard. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create constant condensation within units, this is a common but critical issue. The plastic housing behind the filter is a prime location for growth due to the presence of moisture and dust (a food source).

Attempting a DIY clean with vinegar is strongly discouraged for this scenario. Vinegar is ineffective against the mycotoxins produced by Stachybotrys and will not address the root cause: the excessive moisture within the AC system. Furthermore, disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize spores, spreading contamination throughout your apartment and risking severe respiratory issues, allergic reactions, or worse.

This requires professional assessment and remediation. Our certified inspectors perform a comprehensive evaluation, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination within the ductwork and evaporator coils, which you cannot see. Remediation involves specialized HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and techniques to eliminate the biofilm and prevent recurrence, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's strict health and environmental standards.

For your safety and a permanent solution, I recommend you call our team immediately for a professional inspection. Contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
