Black mold in AC: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making this weird damp smell that’s gotten worse over the last month, and now I’m seeing small black spots around the air vent in our master bedroom. I’ve tried wiping it down with bleach spray but it just comes back. Is this a job I can handle myself with something stronger from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company for a proper cleaning, and what should I expect to pay for a one-bedroom apartment in JLT?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of microbial growth within the AC system, likely exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the constant cooling cycle, which creates significant condensation—a prime environment for mold. The black spots around the vent are a visible indicator, but the damp smell suggests a more extensive contamination within the ductwork and evaporator coil that you cannot see.

Using a bleach spray is a common but ineffective and potentially hazardous DIY approach. Bleach's composition is largely water, which can actually feed the mold root system hidden inside your ducts. Furthermore, its fumes can be circulated by the AC, degrading your indoor air quality. Stronger biocides from a hardware store are not recommended for amateur use due to inhalation risks and the technical knowledge required for proper application within a complex HVAC system.

For a proper resolution, a professional inspection and remediation are absolutely necessary. Our certified technicians use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect the internal ducts and coils, identify the moisture source, and then employ industrial-grade HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial coatings, and steam cleaning to eradicate the growth at its source, not just the visible surface. We also provide a hygienization certificate upon completion, which is often required by landlords in JLT.

For a one-bedroom apartment, a comprehensive AC duct cleaning and mold remediation service typically ranges from AED 1,500 to AED 2,500, depending on the severity and accessibility. Given the health risks and potential for system damage, this is a prudent investment. For an immediate assessment and quote, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
