Black mold in AC: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the black mold I've started to see around the edges of the AC vents in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because of the recent humidity. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of costs are we looking at for a 2-bedroom apartment?

Black mold in AC vents is a common issue in Dubai's climate, especially with the recent high humidity. Given the persistent cough in your children, professional assessment is strongly recommended over a DIY bleach solution.

Bleach is surface-level and ineffective on porous materials; it also fails to address the root cause—the mold colony inside your ductwork, which will continue to release spores. For a respiratory reaction like coughing, the risk of aerosolizing a high concentration of spores during a DIY cleaning attempt is significant and could worsen symptoms.

In Dubai, the constant AC use creates condensation that feeds mold inside the units and ducts. A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuums to remove spores, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials. The critical step is identifying the moisture source—often a clogged condensate drain—and rectifying it to prevent immediate recurrence.

For a two-bedroom apartment, the scope is typically the HVAC system and affected vents. Reputable companies provide before-and-after surface or air quality testing from an independent lab to verify the environment is safe. Without this documentation, you cannot confirm the mold is truly gone.

Costs are not fixed; they depend on the extent of contamination within the system. You should request a detailed assessment and quote from a certified mold inspector. Look for a provider that uses a third-party lab, as this ensures unbiased results and confirms the remediation was successful.
