Black mold in AC: need professional treatment immediately?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell and my allergy symptoms have been awful for the past couple of weeks. I finally pulled the unit apart and found patches of black mold all over the inside of the insulation and around the drip pan. Given how humid it's been in Dubai, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can it wait until next weekend?

Yes, you should arrange for professional treatment as soon as possible. The combination of visible black mold and active allergy symptoms indicates a significant contamination that is directly affecting your indoor air quality.

In Dubai's climate, air conditioners run almost constantly, creating a perfect environment for mold due to condensation. The insulation and drip pan you described are common problem areas where moisture accumulates. While you can wait until the weekend, it's not advisable to continue using the contaminated unit. Running it will continue to aerosolize spores throughout your apartment, worsening your symptoms.

For a situation like this, a simple cleaning is insufficient. Proper remediation involves removing the contaminated insulation, thoroughly cleaning the entire air handling unit and ductwork with specialized antimicrobial agents, and identifying the root cause of the moisture to prevent rapid regrowth. This requires specific techniques to avoid cross-contaminating your living space during the process.

Look for a provider that can not only perform the cleanup but also offers verification testing afterwards to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe, acceptable level. Given the health effects you're experiencing, addressing this promptly is the best course of action.
