Black mold in AC vent causing coughs? Clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just spotted some black specks along the edges of the AC vent in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for two years and never had an issue until this last humid spell. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the entire AC system?

Black specks in AC vents are a common issue in Dubai villas, especially after humid periods. The condensation from constant AC use creates an ideal environment for mold growth. For your children's coughs, this type of exposure often causes irritation and worsens allergy symptoms.
A surface clean with a vinegar solution might remove the visible specks on the vent cover, but it won't address the mold growing inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils. Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces and can release harmful fumes. Given the symptoms and the extent of the system, a professional inspection is advised. They use borescopes to see inside the ducts and take air or swab samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type and concentration. This is the only way to know if your AC unit is the source of the issue and to plan an effective remediation strategy for the entire system. |
