Black mold in AC vent: DIY clean or call pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been blowing out a really damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months. I finally took a look inside and the insulation around the duct is covered in these black, fuzzy patches. Between our humidity and the AC running constantly, it's clearly gotten out of hand. Is this something I can tackle myself with cleaning spray, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company, and what’s the typical cost for that here?

Black mold in AC vents is a serious issue in Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for growth. The damp, earthy smell is a clear indicator of microbial activity. For visible, widespread growth on duct insulation, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.

Attempting a DIY clean with a spray is ineffective and risky. Surface sprays cannot address the root problem within the ductwork or contaminated insulation, which often requires replacement. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can also aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home.

A professional inspection will identify the mold species and the moisture source—often condensation from a poorly insulated duct or a clogged drain line. Remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the entire duct system. The cost for this service varies significantly based on the AC system size and the extent of contamination; you should request an on-site assessment for an accurate scope of work and quotation. Addressing this promptly is key, as persistent exposure can lead to health irritations, especially in bedrooms.
