Black mold in AC vent: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and this morning I finally pulled the vent cover off and saw patches of black stuff all inside the duct. We’ve lived in this Marina apartment for two years and never had this issue until now. Is this something I can clean myself with a spray from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to deal with it properly?

Based on the description of black patches inside your AC duct in a Marina apartment, this is a serious concern that requires professional attention. The damp smell is a classic indicator of active microbial growth, and the visible colonization confirms it. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, air conditioning systems are prime locations for mold due to constant condensation. Attempting a DIY clean with a generic spray is highly inadvisable. These products are surface cleaners and will not address the root cause—the moisture source—or the extensive contamination likely present deep within the ductwork and on the cooling coils, which you cannot see. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air scrubbing will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your apartment and potentially into the building's central system, affecting other units.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation in multi-tenant buildings to protect all residents. A certified professional inspection is absolutely necessary. The process involves a visual assessment, moisture mapping, and air/surface sampling to identify the species (crucial for determining health risks and remediation protocol) and the full extent of the problem.

For a comprehensive inspection and certified remediation that complies with local standards, I strongly recommend contacting Saniservice. Their experts use specialized equipment like borescopes, HEPA vacuums, and air scrubbers to safely and effectively resolve such issues.
