Black mold in AC vent: DIY or professional cleanup?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor and I’ve just spotted a patch of black mold inside the vent in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because the humidity has been so intense lately. I’m worried about my family breathing this in, but I have no idea what this kind of cleanup would cost here. Should I call one of those mold remediation companies or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach solution?

That damp odor and visible black mold indicate active growth inside your AC system, a common issue here due to our high humidity causing constant condensation. For a small, visible patch only on the vent cover, you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Remove the vent cover, scrub it with a detergent solution (soap and water often works better than bleach for porous surfaces), dry it completely, and then reinstall it.

However, the odor suggests the mold is likely deeper within the ductwork or on the cooling coil, which is not a DIY job. Improper cleaning can disperse spores throughout your home. Professional remediation is strongly advised if anyone has respiratory issues, allergies, or if the odor persists after cleaning the vent.

A reputable company will use containment barriers, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatments for the entire system, not just the visible parts. They should also identify and correct the moisture source—often a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation—to prevent immediate recurrence. Always request before-and-after testing to verify the results; this is the only way to confirm the air quality is safe.
