Black mold in AC vent making kids cough: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold that's formed along the edges of our bedroom AC vent in our apartment in Jumeirah. It’s been spreading slowly over the hot season and I try to wipe it with vinegar, but it just comes back worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaning products, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here?

Black mold in AC vents is a health concern, especially for children, and the recurring cough is a common symptom of exposure. Vinegar is often ineffective on porous surfaces and against certain mold types, as it doesn't kill the roots and can actually feed moisture-loving species, causing regrowth.

In Dubai's climate, your AC unit is a constant source of condensation, creating the perfect humid environment for mold to thrive inside the ductwork where you cannot see or clean it. Simply wiping the visible spot on the vent is a temporary fix; the main colony is almost certainly growing deeper within the system.

For a recurring problem with health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. DIY attempts with stronger chemicals like bleach are not recommended, as they can be hazardous to mix, damage AC components, and release harmful fumes into your home without addressing the root cause. Professionals use containment procedures and industrial-grade HEPA vacuums to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning.

The process involves identifying the moisture source, physically removing the contamination from the ducts and unit, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions. For verification, some companies can provide before-and-after swab tests processed through a microbiology lab to confirm the environment has been made safe. Given your children's symptoms, this measured approach is the most reliable way to resolve the issue.
