Black mold in AC: who to call for cleanup in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell that’s gotten worse over the last few weeks. I finally pulled the filter out yesterday and the back of the unit and the inside of the vent are covered in black, fuzzy spots. We've been getting headaches and I'm really worried it's mold. What's the best way to get this professionally cleaned and who should I contact in Dubai for a proper inspection?

That damp, earthy smell and black, fuzzy growth are classic signs of mold colonization in your AC system, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and year-round AC use. The headaches you're experiencing are a known reaction to mold exposure for many people.

For a situation this advanced, a professional inspection is strongly recommended before any cleaning is attempted. The visible growth on the vent and inside the unit indicates a more significant issue within the ductwork that requires assessment. In Dubai, look for a company that specializes in indoor air quality and mold remediation, not just a general AC cleaning service.

A credible provider will first conduct a thorough inspection, often using a borescope to see inside the ducts, and should take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This step is crucial; it confirms the type of mold present and guides the appropriate remediation protocol. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and reputable companies adhere to international standards like IICRC for mold remediation.

The cleanup itself involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments on the entire system—ducts, coils, drip pans, and fan units—not just the visible spots. They should also identify and correct the moisture source, which is often condensation from a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation. After remediation, a post-clearance test with documented results is essential to verify the air quality is safe. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide this full cycle of evidence-based service.
