Black mold in AC worsening my son's asthma?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park seems to be making this weird damp smell, and for the past couple of weeks, my son's asthma has been way worse, especially at night. I found some black specks around the air vent in his bedroom and I'm starting to panic. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

Hi there, and thank you for reaching out with this very serious concern. As a certified mold inspector here in Dubai, I hear this exact scenario far too often, especially with our climate and the reliance on AC systems.
First, and most importantly: Do not use bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes can severely aggravate your son's asthma, and it can actually feed certain types of mold. What you're describing—the damp smell, black specks around the vent, and a direct correlation with worsened pediatric asthma—are major red flags. Asthma attacks triggered by mold are not something to take lightly. The AC unit is a complex system. Those black specks at the vent are likely just the tip of the iceberg. The real colony is probably thriving inside the dark, damp ductwork and on the cooling coils, continuously pumping spores into your son's bedroom air all night. Disturbing it yourself without proper containment and HEPA filtration will just aerosolize more spores, making the situation much worse. Under Dubai Municipality guidelines, improper handling of mold can violate public health standards. A professional inspection is absolutely critical. We use borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts, air and surface sampling to identify the exact mold species and spore count, and then execute a controlled remediation protocol. This isnt a job for a standard AC cleaning service; you need an environmental specialist. Given your son's health is already impacted, please do not delay. I strongly urge you to get a professional assessment immediately. Call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough inspection. We can determine the extent of the problem and make sure its solved safely. |
