Black mold in baby's room: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our bedroom wall where it meets the ceiling, and it's starting to spread. We're in a villa in Mirdif and I'm worried because my toddler sleeps in that room. What's the most effective way to handle this ourselves, or should we call a professional company right away?

For a child’s room, especially with visible spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The type of mould matters significantly, and only a lab analysis can confirm if it's the more problematic Stachybotrys (black mould) or a less hazardous species. This is not a risk to guess with.
In Dubai’s climate, the cause is almost always a hidden source of moisture, not just surface condensation. The mould on the wall is a symptom. Common culprits in villas are a small roof leak, leaking AC condensation drain lines inside the wall, or insulation issues causing cold spots and condensation you can't see. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar only addresses the visible growth and will fail, as the root moisture problem remains. For a temporary measure before a pro arrives, you can wipe the area with a diluted vinegar solution to reduce surface spores, but ensure the room is well-ventilated and your toddler is not present. However, this is not a solution. A certified mould remediation company will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the hidden water source, fix it, then properly contain and remove the contaminated materials. They will also perform post-remediation verification testing to confirm spore counts are back to safe, natural levels. This diagnostic approach is critical for your family's health. |
