Black mold in bathroom: clean myself or tell landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years in JVC and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling edge above our shower. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the extractor fan is pretty weak. What's the most effective way to clean this off for good, and should I be calling my landlord about this or is it something I handle myself?

Your situation is very common in Dubai, especially in bathrooms without windows. The black spots are likely mildew or mold thriving on the constant humidity from showers and the weak ventilation. The high ambient humidity year-round creates ideal conditions for this.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square meter), you can often handle it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated bathroom mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. The key is not just cleaning but addressing the moisture. Run the extractor fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small dehumidifier or moisture absorber for the room.

However, if the growth is extensive, has penetrated the ceiling material (e.g., drywall feels soft), or returns quickly after cleaning, you should notify your landlord. Under typical Dubai rental agreements, the landlord is responsible for rectifying issues related to building integrity and ventilation systems. A weak extractor fan is a maintenance item they should address. A professional inspection can determine if the mold is superficial or a sign of a deeper issue, like a leak from the apartment above.

For persistent problems, a lab test can identify the mold species, which is useful documentation for your landlord and for understanding any associated health risks, particularly for households with allergies or asthma.
