Black mold in bathroom corner: clean or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner where the bathroom wall meets the ceiling in our JVC apartment. It’s been super humid the last few weeks and I think the steam from our showers has finally caused it to get out of hand. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I just call my building maintenance right away?

Black mold in bathroom corners is common in Dubai, especially during humid periods when steam from showers condenses on cooler surfaces like walls and ceilings.

For a small, localized patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the roots. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry and improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower.

If the mold covers a larger area, keeps returning quickly after cleaning, or if you notice a musty smell or any physical symptoms like respiratory irritation, you should call for professional help. Persistent mold often indicates a hidden moisture issue within the wall or ceiling, which building maintenance or a specialist with a microbiology lab can properly diagnose and remediate. In many JVC apartments, this level of investigation goes beyond what standard maintenance will handle.
