Black mold in bathroom: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots spreading in the corners of our master bathroom, especially behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. The AC in our apartment seems to make the whole place humid and it’s gotten worse since the weather changed. I’m worried about the health of our newborn. Should I call a professional company like Servicemark for a proper cleanup, or is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, and what would the cost difference be?

Bathroom mould in Dubai is common due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from AC units, which create a persistent damp environment. For a small, new patch, a DIY approach with a dedicated mould cleaner (more effective than plain bleach) can work. Thoroughly scrub the area, let the solution dwell, and ensure it is completely dry with increased ventilation.
However, with a newborn in the home and the mould described as "spreading," a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The health risks for infants are higher, and what's visible on the surface is often just a fraction of the growth, which can penetrate porous grout and hide behind walls. A proper inspection identifies the moisture source—often a leaky seal or inadequate ventilation exacerbated by the AC system—which DIY cleaning cannot fix. The cost difference is significant, but so is the outcome. DIY is a temporary surface fix. Professional remediation addresses the root cause, removes the biofilm, and applies antimicrobial coatings to inhibit regrowth, providing a long-term solution and documented verification that the environment is safe for your family. For peace of mind with a young child, the professional route is the more prudent choice. |
