Black mold in bathroom: DIY or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bathroom ceiling has started growing these black spots in the corner above the shower, and it’s getting worse really fast. I’m in a Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and I think it started after the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. The exhaust fan is pretty weak and doesn’t seem to do much. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call my building maintenance immediately?

For a small, surface-level patch in your bathroom, DIY is often possible. Start by scrubbing the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Always wear a mask and gloves. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a portable dehumidifier. Wiping down wet walls and tiles immediately also helps.
Given your location in JVC and the rapid regrowth, this is likely a persistent humidity issue. Weak exhaust fans are a common problem in Dubai apartments and often don't meet the ventilation requirements needed for our high humidity. The building's maintenance team is responsible for ensuring the exhaust system is functional and meets performance standards. You should call them to inspect and potentially upgrade the fan; this is a building infrastructure issue, not just a unit-specific one. If the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or ceiling tiles, or if it covers an area larger than a square meter, DIY cleaning becomes a temporary fix. In these cases, the material itself is likely compromised and requires professional assessment and replacement to solve the problem permanently. A certified mold inspector can identify the species and the full extent of the problem, which is advised if you have health concerns or the growth keeps returning despite your efforts. |
