Black mold in bathroom: DIY or professional cleaning?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner where the shower is. It's been super humid lately and I'm worried it's making it worse. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Small black spots in a bathroom corner are often Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. Whether you can DIY depends on the size and the surface.
For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous tile surface, a supermarket bleach solution can remove the visible stain. Scrub with a stiff brush, ensure the area is well-ventilated, and let the surface dry completely. However, bleach only removes surface discoloration; it does not address the root cause or kill the mold roots penetrating porous grout. For recurring mold, larger areas, or if it's on porous surfaces like drywall or the ceiling, DIY is a temporary fix. The constant humidity here means the underlying moisture problem is likely unresolved, and the mold will return. Persistent mold, especially if accompanied by a musty smell or if household members experience increased allergy symptoms, warrants a professional assessment. In Dubai villas and older apartments, hidden leaks behind tiles or within the wall are a frequent cause of spreading mold. A proper inspection identifies the moisture source—often poor ventilation or a leak—which must be fixed first. Remediation then involves specialized antimicrobial agents and sanding/rebuilding porous materials, followed by verifying the spore count is reduced with post-remediation testing. This is the only way to ensure it doesn't return. |
