Black mold in bathroom grout: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these small black spots appearing in the grout between the tiles behind our toilet in Marina. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray but it came back after a couple of days, and the whole bathroom feels damp all the time. Is this something I can fix myself with a better product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

Black mold in bathroom grout is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation from air conditioning. The spots you're seeing are likely the surface manifestation of a deeper colony thriving in the damp grout and potentially the wall behind it.

A bleach spray often only bleaches the visible surface and doesn't kill the root structure inside the porous material, which is why it returns so quickly. For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated fungicidal cleaner designed for bathrooms, used with scrubbing and followed by improving ventilation, can sometimes manage it. However, since it has already returned and you describe a constant damp feeling, the moisture source is likely persistent.

In Marina apartments, this persistent dampness is frequently due to a compromised sealant around the toilet or hidden condensation from AC ducting running in the wall void. This requires a professional inspection to identify the actual moisture source; treating the mold without fixing the water issue is a temporary solution. A proper remediation involves removing the affected grout, treating the area with antimicrobial agents, and re-grouting with a mold-inhibitive product, all while ensuring the underlying cause is resolved. For recurring mold that survives DIY efforts, a professional assessment is the most effective long-term solution.
