Black mold in bathroom grout: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the wall tiles. It’s worst in the corner behind the toilet where it’s always a bit damp. Given how humid it gets here, is this something I need to get treated professionally right away, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

That black spotting in grout is extremely common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from showers. For a small, surface-level area, a DIY approach is often sufficient.
Start by scrubbing the affected grout with a stiff brush and a dedicated grout cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and baking soda. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan or dehumidifier immediately after. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting air outside. Wipe down wet walls and tiles after use. You should consider a professional assessment if the mold has penetrated deeply behind the tiles, if the affected area is large (more than a square meter), or if the musty smell persists after thorough cleaning and drying. This indicates a hidden moisture problem, possibly within the wall, that requires specialized equipment to diagnose. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the root cause to prevent recurrence, which a surface clean won't solve. |
