Black mold in bedroom: call professional or building maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the wall facing the outside. Ever since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. I'm really worried this is the cause. Should we be calling a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, or is this something maintenance in our building is required to handle?

Given Dubai's high humidity and your wall's exterior-facing position, this is likely condensation-related mold from temperature differences. Your husband's symptoms align with common mold exposure reactions like nasal congestion and eye irritation.

For a small, visible patch, building maintenance should handle it as it's likely a structural moisture issue. They are responsible for fixing the external wall leak or insulation flaw causing condensation. However, if the patch is larger than one square meter, has a strong musty odor, or if moisture has spread inside the wall, a professional assessment is wise.

Before calling anyone, you can gently clean the surface mold with a diluted vinegar solution to temporarily reduce spores, but this won't fix the underlying moisture source. Keep the closet door open and ensure air circulation.

Ultimately, the building must rectify the root cause. If they are unresponsive or the problem persists after their repair, a certified mold inspector can provide a independent assessment with lab testing to identify the species and scope, which is useful for ensuring the building's remediation was effective.
