Black mold in bedroom closet: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I think it might be from the humidity, but I'm worried about my kids' health. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company straight away?

Black mold on an exterior wall in a Dubai villa is commonly due to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior, a frequent issue here. The high humidity, especially during summer months, accelerates this growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterward. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

Given its location on an exterior wall, the root cause is likely persistent condensation or a minor leak. DIY cleaning will often be temporary, as the mold will return if the moisture issue isn't resolved. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact source—whether it's insufficient insulation, a leaking pipe within the wall, or another fault. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden problems.

For health concerns with children, and because this is a recurring issue in a living space, err on the side of caution. A professional assessment can confirm the mold type and extent, providing a targeted remediation plan that addresses both the growth and the moisture to prevent recurrence.
