Black mold in bedroom closet: clean or call inspector?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It seems to have gotten worse since the heavy rains last month in our villa in Al Barsha. I'm really worried about our health and what's causing it. What's the first step I should take—should I just clean it myself or do I need to call a professional inspector right away?

Given the location on an exterior wall and the timing after heavy rains, this is likely a moisture intrusion issue common in Dubai villas. The first step is to identify and stop the water source; inspect the exterior wall and roof for cracks or leaks that may have been worsened by the rain.

Do not clean it yourself. Disturbing the patch can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air. For a recurring or post-rain issue of this size, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact extent of the dampness within the wall cavity, which is often far greater than the visible patch.

The constant high humidity and year-round AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold regrowth if the underlying moisture isn't resolved. A proper inspection will determine if this is a simple condensation issue or a more serious leak requiring repair. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also take an air or surface sample to identify the mold type, which is crucial for assessing health risk and planning the correct remediation method.
