Black mold in bedroom closet: clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid, it's appeared and seems to be spreading. I'm really worried about our health and it ruining our clothes. What is the first step I should take—should I try to clean it myself or immediately call a professional mold inspection company in Dubai?

That black mold in your closet is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially on exterior walls during the humid season. The first step is to assess the size and cause. For a patch smaller than one square foot (about the size of a standard A4 paper), you can often handle it yourself if you address the moisture source.

Start by moving your clothes and inspecting the wall. The mold is likely due to condensation forming on the cool interior surface of the outside wall, a phenomenon called cold bridging. This is extremely common here where our AC runs year-round, creating a significant temperature differential with the humid outdoor air. Wipe the area down with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution—never bleach, as it only removes the colour and not the root structure. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan afterward.

However, if the patch is larger than one square foot, has a strong, musty odour, or if you see it has penetrated through the drywall or behind the baseboard, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. This indicates a more significant moisture issue that DIY cleaning won't solve. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact source of the water intrusion, which is critical for a permanent fix. They can also take a sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol, especially if you have health concerns. In your case, since it's spreading, the underlying cause needs to be identified to protect both your health and the villa's structure.
