Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY clean or call UAE pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to have gotten worse. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past week. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company here in the UAE right away?

The black mold you've found is likely due to condensation on that exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where temperature differences between AC-cooled interiors and the hot outside create moisture. Your stuffy nose and headache are consistent with mold exposure, which often causes allergy-like respiratory irritation.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach can be effective. First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water; vinegar is often more effective on porous surfaces like drywall than bleach. Scrub the area gently, then dry it completely with a fan. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Check for AC condensation pipe leaks near that wall and ensure the closet is well-ventilated; leaving the door ajar and using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside can help.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. The mold may have penetrated the wall cavity, which requires specialized equipment to properly remediate. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source and take air or surface samples for a microbiology lab to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.
