Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for a couple of weeks and now I’ve pulled out my winter clothes to find a bunch of black mold spots on the back wall. It’s in a built-in wardrobe in our Jumeirah Park villa. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company right away?

Based on the situation you've described in your Jumeirah Park villa, my professional recommendation is to call a certified professional immediately. A leak from an AC unit inside a confined space like a wardrobe for several weeks has almost certainly caused more than superficial mold growth. The black spots you see on the wall are the visible colonies, but the moisture will have penetrated the building materials behind (plasterboard, insulation), creating a hidden reservoir of mold that you cannot effectively address with DIY methods.

The UAE's high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for rapid mold proliferation. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar is a temporary surface fix that fails to address the root moisture problem and can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home. Furthermore, improper handling can pose significant health risks, especially with black mold.

A professional company like Saniservice will conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination. Our remediation process involves isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials, and employing industrial-grade drying equipment and antimicrobial treatments to ensure the problem is resolved at its source. This is the only way to guarantee the health of your indoor environment and protect the structure of your villa.

For a situation of this severity, do not attempt a DIY fix. I strongly advise you to contact our experts for a comprehensive assessment. Please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
