Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall and seems to be growing, probably from the humidity. I'm tempted to just wipe it down with bleach myself, but I'm worried it might be a bigger issue inside the wall. Is this something I can safely handle on my own, or should I call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the conditions you've described, I strongly recommend a professional inspection before any attempt at DIY cleaning. The presence of black mold, its recurrence, and its location on an exterior wall corner are significant red flags.

The Dubai climate is a primary driver of such issues. Year-round air conditioning creates constant temperature differentials between indoor and outdoor environments, leading to condensation within wall cavities, especially on poorly insulated external walls. This hidden moisture, which you cannot address by simply wiping the surface, provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive inside the wall. Bleach is a common but ineffective DIY solution; it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold's hyphae (roots) penetrating porous materials like drywall and concrete.

Attempting to clean it yourself risks aerosolizing harmful spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home, and exacerbating potential health risks. Furthermore, improper handling can violate guidelines set by Dubai Municipality, which emphasizes proper containment and disposal for microbial growth.

A certified professional from a company like Saniservice will conduct a thorough assessment using moisture meters and borescopes to determine the extent of the infestation within the wall cavity. The remediation process involves isolating the area, safely removing contaminated materials, addressing the underlying moisture source (often requiring improved ventilation or insulation), and using specialized biocides and HEPA filtration to ensure complete eradication.

For a definitive diagnosis and a guaranteed solution, it is prudent to call in experts. Contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan.
