Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or contact maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s on the interior wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit more humid than the rest of the apartment. With the recent humidity, it seems to have gotten worse. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I immediately contact my building’s maintenance?

That black patch is a classic sign of condensation buildup on a cold surface, which is very common on exterior walls in Dubai's climate. The high humidity gets trapped behind those boxes, and the cold wall from the AC creates the perfect environment for mold.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, scrub the area thoroughly, and let it dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push the roots deeper into the porous wall material. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Move the boxes away from the wall to improve air circulation, and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier in the closet.

You should immediately contact building maintenance if the patch is large (over one square foot), if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or if you notice a musty odor permeating the room. This indicates a potential leak inside the wall or a more serious condensation issue that requires professional diagnosis. In many cases, the building is responsible for the structural envelope. For persistent or recurring problems, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the specific mold type and moisture source, which is often needed to resolve the issue permanently.
