Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or professional cost?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. It’s grown a lot since I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago, and the musty smell is now really strong whenever we open the door. I’m worried about our health and the cost of fixing it, especially if it’s inside the walls. What’s the realistic price range for professional mold remediation for a small bedroom area like this in Dubai, and is it a complete DIY fail to try and handle it myself?

Given Dubai's high humidity and reliance on AC, that rapid growth and strong musty smell suggest a significant moisture source, likely condensation from the AC or a leak in the external wall. This is a common issue here.

For a small but actively growing patch, professional remediation is strongly advised. The cost varies considerably based on the extent of the hidden damage. If the mold is only on the surface, treatment is more straightforward. However, if it has penetrated the drywall or insulation behind it—which is likely given the location and smell—the scope and cost increase as wall removal, structural drying, and antimicrobial treatment become necessary. You should request an on-site inspection for an accurate assessment; they can use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall without unnecessary damage.

DIY is a complete fail here. Bleach or vinegar only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or the hidden colony. Disturbing it yourself will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your bedroom, creating a much larger contamination issue and potential health risk. The only safe DIY step is to address the humidity by ensuring proper AC flow into the closet and checking for any obvious water leaks.

The remediation cost is an investment in your indoor health and the integrity of your property. A proper job will include containment of the area, removal of contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and treatment to prevent rapid regrowth in our climate. Always ask for a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the space is safe.
