Black mold in bedroom closet: health risk and removal?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold in the corner of our bedroom closet, probably from the last humid spell. Lately, my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches that clear up once we leave for work. I’m really worried this could be the cause. What’s the best way to deal with this safely and who should I call to check if it’s a serious health risk?

The symptoms you describe—morning stuffiness and headaches that resolve when you leave—are a strong indicator that the mold is affecting your indoor air quality. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, as high humidity, especially during humid spells, condenses on cooler interior surfaces like closet walls, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.

For a patch you describe as "big," professional assessment is strongly recommended. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air. The primary health risk depends on the species; while many molds just cause allergic irritation, some types can produce mycotoxins.

You should call a certified mold inspector who can identify the moisture source (often a small plumbing leak or condensation from the AC duct running in the wall) and take an air or surface sample for lab analysis. This is the only way to confirm the species and the actual health risk. In the UAE, look for providers who hold certifications like IICRC and can provide a detailed report with lab results from an accredited microbiology lab.

For remediation, the gold standard is containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials. Once the moisture issue is fixed and the mold is professionally removed, your symptoms should subside. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and keep the closet doors open to reduce stagnant, humid air.
