Black mold in bedroom closet: inspection needed and health risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid, it's appeared and seems to be spreading. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about it being behind the walls?

Black mold in a bedroom closet on an exterior villa wall in Arabian Ranches is a common issue here, directly linked to our climate. The recent increase in humidity creates condensation on cooler exterior walls, especially behind closets where air circulation is poor. This moisture allows mold to grow rapidly.

Health risks depend on the species and your household's sensitivity. Stachybotrys (true "black mold") is less common but can produce mycotoxins. More frequently, it's Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which primarily cause nasal congestion, throat irritation, or worsened allergy symptoms, particularly for children or those with asthma. The main concern is its rapid spread, indicating a persistent moisture source that needs addressing.

A proper inspection is crucial because visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. In Dubai villas, it frequently grows inside the wall cavity on the back of the gypsum board. A certified inspector should conduct a visual assessment and use a moisture meter to detect dampness within the wall. Air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab (like the one we operate) is the only way to definitively identify the species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate spores and fail to address the root moisture problem. The priority is to identify and fix the source of the condensation, which often requires professional remediation to remove the affected materials safely and restore proper conditions to prevent recurrence.
