Black mold in bedroom closet: leak or humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah. It's on the wall behind the clothes rack, and the room has felt unusually damp lately even with the AC running. Could this be from a hidden leak, or is it just the high humidity we've been having? What's the best way to treat this ourselves, or should I call a professional?

In Dubai's climate, it's most likely a combination of high ambient humidity and a cold surface creating condensation. The wall behind the closet is probably an exterior wall, and the constant cold from the AC inside meeting the extreme heat outside creates a perfect environment for condensation, which then leads to mold. A hidden leak from a pipe is also a possibility, especially in a villa.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part bleach to four parts water. Let it dry completely. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the moisture source.

The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture. Check for any obvious plumbing leaks in adjacent walls. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar. A moisture meter can help determine if the wall is damp from a leak or just condensation.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area (over 10 square feet), or you discover significant dampness, a professional inspection is recommended. They use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture and can take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is the only way to confirm if the underlying cause is a leak or chronic condensation and to develop a proper remediation plan.
