Black mold in bedroom closet: treat or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly for a while because the wall feels slightly damp and the room has a weird, earthy smell we couldn't place before. This is in an older building in Deira.
What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or should we immediately call our building management to handle it?

Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's been growing unnoticed for some time, this requires immediate attention. The damp wall suggests an ongoing moisture source, which is the root cause.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or a solution specifically designed for mold. Discard any contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture. Since the wall itself is damp, the issue is likely a hidden leak from plumbing, a crack in the external wall allowing humidity in, or severe condensation from the AC unit. In older Deira buildings, this is common. DIY cleaning is a temporary fix; the mold will return until the moisture source is identified and repaired. You should immediately notify your building management. Under Dubai's rental and property regulations, the structural integrity of the building, including water leaks from common pipes or the exterior, is typically the responsibility of the owner or management company. They are obligated to investigate and address the source of the moisture. Given the prolonged growth and earthy smell, which can indicate a more established colony, a professional inspection is advisable. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall without unnecessary demolition. For health safety, especially in a bedroom, verifying the mold type through lab analysis of a tape-lift sample is often recommended to inform the remediation scope. |
