Black mold in bedroom closet, who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried it might be from a hidden leak or just the crazy humidity we've had lately. What’s the best way to handle this properly and who should I call to check for water damage behind the wall?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a serious red flag, almost certainly indicating excess moisture. In Dubai's climate, this is commonly due to condensation from the AC unit's cold air meeting the humid outdoor air penetrating the wall, or a leak from a pipe or external water seepage.

Your first step is to call a reputable water damage restoration or mold inspection company. Do not call a generic handyman. A proper inspector will use a thermal imaging camera to identify cold spots (indicating moisture) and a borescope to look inside the wall cavity for hidden damage. They should also use a moisture meter to get quantifiable readings on the wall's saturation level. This diagnostic step is critical to avoid simply cleaning the surface while the problem continues unseen.

For a small, visible patch, you can carefully clean it with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar, but this is only a temporary measure if the moisture source isn't fixed. Given its location and that it's behind items, the extent is likely larger than it appears. Remediation often involves removing the affected drywall to properly dry the cavity and address the root cause, which could be inadequate insulation, a leaking pipe, or a crack in the external wall.

Always ensure the company you hire provides a detailed report with moisture readings and, if mold is suspected, can take samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This documentation is essential for landlords or property management if the issue is structural.
