Black mold in bedroom: contact landlord or professional cleaner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It's gotten much worse since last week's humidity. I'm worried about our health sleeping right next to it every night. What's the fastest way to get this professionally cleaned and treated in Dubai, and should I contact my landlord first or just handle it myself?

Contact your landlord immediately. In Dubai, landlords are generally responsible for addressing structural issues like mold, especially when it's caused by underlying problems like a leaking pipe or inadequate insulation. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper handling can disturb the spores and spread them throughout your home.

This rapid spread is a significant red flag. The high humidity here accelerates mold growth, and a patch that expands that quickly often indicates an ongoing moisture source, like condensation from an AC unit or a hidden leak in the wall. A professional inspection is needed to find and fix the root cause; otherwise, it will just return.

For a case this severe, especially in a bedroom, you need a certified mold remediation specialist, not a general cleaner. They will contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. The process should always start with an inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes air or surface sampling to identify the species and spore count.

While you wait, improve ventilation in the room by running the AC and keeping the door closed to prevent spore migration. Your landlord may have a preferred contractor, but you can also request they use a company that provides documented before-and-after results from an independent lab to verify the space is safe.
