Black mold in bedroom corner: clean or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten much worse since last week's humidity. What’s the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call maintenance or is this something I can clean myself first?

Black mold spreading along an exterior wall corner after high humidity strongly suggests a condensation issue, which is common in Dubai due to the extreme temperature differential between our air-conditioned interiors and the hot, humid outdoor air. This often leads to moisture accumulation inside walls, especially if insulation is inadequate.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). However, this is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture problem isn't resolved.

Given that it's spreading and located on an exterior wall, the moisture source is likely internal condensation or a minor leak. Simply cleaning it will not stop it from returning. The priority is identifying and rectifying the root cause of the moisture.

You should report this to your building's maintenance team first. In the UAE, building management is typically responsible for the structural integrity of external walls and common plumbing. They can investigate potential leaks from AC drain lines or insufficient insulation. For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type and the moisture source, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness that maintenance might miss. A lab test can identify the species, which is important for assessing health risks and determining the correct remediation protocol.
