Black mold in bedroom corner, clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s the room closest to the AC unit and the wall even feels a bit damp. What’s the best way to handle this in Dubai’s humidity, and should I call a professional or is this something I can clean myself?

Black mold in a bedroom corner, especially with dampness, indicates an active moisture issue that needs immediate attention. In Dubai's high humidity, this is commonly caused by thermal bridging—where the cold indoor air from your AC meets the hot exterior wall, creating condensation inside the wall cavity.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or vinegar. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply wiping the visible mold is a temporary fix. The underlying dampness means it will almost certainly return unless the root cause is addressed.

Given the wall feels damp and the location near the AC unit, this is likely a persistent issue. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source. It could be insufficient insulation, a leak from the AC condensate drain line, or pressure imbalances in the room. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact problem without guesswork.

In Dubai, remediation often involves correcting the insulation, sealing the area, and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent recurrence. For health safety and a permanent solution, especially with black mold, calling a certified professional who can provide a verified post-remediation report is the most effective course of action.
