Black mold in bedroom corner: DIY or call a pro« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's behind the wardrobe, so we never saw it before. We keep the AC on most of the time, but with the recent humidity, I guess it got worse. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai?

That's a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, very common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The cold wall meets warm, moist air, creating a perfect environment for mold, especially in hidden spots like behind furniture.
For a small area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach may be sufficient. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. The key is to fix the moisture source. Ensure your AC is not set too cold, improving air circulation by moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall can help, and using a dehumidifier in the room can reduce ambient moisture. However, given its location in a bedroom and the fact it was hidden, a professional inspection is strongly advised for two reasons. First, the visible spots are often just the "bloom;" the hyphae (root structure) can penetrate the paint and plaster. Second, the species matters. A lab test can identify if it's the common, less hazardous Cladosporium or something more concerning like Stachybotrys (toxic black mold), which requires specific containment protocols for safe removal. In Dubai, reputable remediation companies follow international standards like IICRC. They will not only remove the visible mold but also identify and rectify the underlying condensation issue, provide HEPA vacuuming, and most importantly, offer post-remediation verification testing from an independent lab to confirm the space is truly clean and safe. For health assurance, especially in a sleeping area, this verified approach is recommended. |
