Black mold in bedroom corner - DIY or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's been really humid lately and I think our AC might not be drying the air enough. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my landlord first?

That black spot pattern at the wall-ceiling junction is a classic sign of condensation, a very common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The cold wall from the AC meets warm, humid air, creating the moisture mold needs to grow.

First, document the issue clearly with photos and note the date. In Dubai, landlords are generally responsible for resolving issues like this that are related to the building's structure and environmental control systems. You should inform them promptly.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

The root cause is almost certainly insufficient cooling or poor insulation in that corner, allowing condensation. Simply cleaning it will not prevent rapid regrowth. A professional inspection can identify the exact cause—often a missing insulation barrier in the ceiling or an AC output issue—and measure the moisture content in the wall. This evidence is crucial for your landlord to understand the necessary fix, which is a structural remediation, not just a surface clean. In many cases, resolving this requires adding insulation or adjusting the AC system to prevent the cold bridge effect.
