Black mold in bedroom corner: DIY or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s the wall that backs onto the ensuite bathroom. I’m worried it’s gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. What’s the best way to handle this in a Dubai villa – should I call maintenance or is this something I can clean myself first?

That black spot pattern is a classic sign of condensation-related mold, very common in Dubai villas. The wall backing onto your bathroom is likely a cold bridge, where the air-conditioned bedroom meets the humid air from the ensuite, causing moisture to condense inside the wall and create the perfect environment for growth. The recent humidity spike would absolutely accelerate this.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mixture of one part white vinegar to one part water or a dedicated mold remover; never use bleach as it only removes the surface color and can push moisture deeper. Scrub the area thoroughly and let it dry completely. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

Given its location on a structural corner and its recurrence, this strongly suggests a persistent hidden issue, like a small plumbing leak from the bathroom or insufficient insulation. DIY cleaning will be temporary.

The recommended course is to report it to your villa maintenance team first. They need to investigate the bathroom side for leaks and assess the insulation. If the problem returns after their repair, or if the area is larger than it first appears, a professional mold inspection is warranted. An inspector uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact moisture source and can take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol.
