Black mold in bedroom corner: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our bedroom wall, behind the wardrobe. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it might have started from the high humidity we had last month. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company right away?

Based on the description of black spots on an exterior wall corner behind furniture, this is a classic case of mold growth due to localized condensation, a very common issue in Dubai's high-humidity climate. The wall is likely a thermal bridge, where the cooler interior surface from continuous AC use meets the warm, humid air, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For a small, surface-level area (less than 1 square meter), a cautious DIY approach may be possible. First, move the wardrobe to isolate the area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the affected hard surface with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect. Crucially, you must identify and rectify the moisture source. This is likely poor ventilation behind the furniture and the temperature differential. Improve air circulation in that corner and consider using a dehumidifier.

However, given the location—behind a wardrobe where the growth has been undisturbed for a potential period—there is a significant risk the mold has penetrated the plasterboard or wallpaper. Disturbing it further with DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores and contaminate other areas of your home. For any suspected penetration, recurring growth, or an area larger than 1 square meter, professional inspection and remediation is not just recommended, but essential for health and property integrity.

Our certified professionals at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact moisture source and extent of contamination. We then perform containment and hygienization using industrial-grade HEPA filtration to safely remove the mold and apply antimicrobial coatings to prevent recurrence, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality standards. For a proper assessment and to ensure it is handled safely, I strongly advise you to call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
