Black mold in bedroom corner: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s right above the window in our Marina apartment, and it’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. What’s the most effective way to deal with this myself, or do I need to call a professional company?

Based on the description of your situation in the Marina apartment, you are almost certainly dealing with a condensation-induced mold issue, a very common problem in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning use. The corner where the wall meets the ceiling is a classic cold bridge, where the building's structural elements meet and where indoor condensation readily forms, providing the perfect environment for mold, especially during humid periods.

For a small, new patch (less than 1 square meter/10 square feet), a cautious DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not simply wipe it, as this will aerosolize spores. The most effective method is to lightly mist the area with a 70% isopropyl alcohol or a diluted white vinegar solution to suppress spores, then carefully scrub with a microfiber cloth. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely. However, this is only a surface fix. The underlying cause—excess moisture and a thermal bridge—remains.

Given the location (above a window, a known weak point) and the fact it has worsened with humidity, the moisture source is likely persistent. In the UAE, proper remediation requires identifying and rectifying the root cause, which often involves assessing the building envelope and HVAC system.

For a recurring or spreading issue like this, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the condensation and moisture intrusion. We then provide a detailed report and a remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines. Attempting to handle a persistent mold problem incorrectly can lead to further contamination and health risks.
