Black mold in bedroom corner: DIY or contact Dubai management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or should we contact our building management in Dubai immediately?

Contact your building management immediately. This is likely a condensation issue from your AC meeting the warm exterior wall, and in Dubai's climate, that moisture intrusion is the building's structural responsibility to address. The black spots are a symptom, and merely cleaning them won't stop the root cause.
For a temporary DIY measure before they respond, you can wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) to help suppress surface growth. Do not use bleach, as it can damage paint and only bleaches the mould without killing the roots. However, this is not a fix. The management should send a technician to inspect for and rectify the thermal bridging or insulation flaw causing the condensation. They are obligated to address structural defects that lead to indoor dampness. After the moisture source is professionally resolved, the wall will need to be properly cleaned, treated with an antimicrobial solution, and repainted to prevent recurrence. If the visible area is larger than a square foot, or if you detect a musty odour, a professional inspection is wise to assess any potential spread within the wall cavity. |
