Black mold in bedroom corner - remove myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s been extra humid lately and the room always feels damp even with the AC running. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

That black spot pattern behind your headboard is a classic sign of a condensation issue, very common in Dubai bedrooms. The wall is likely a cold bridge where the outside heat meets your cooled interior, creating constant dampness that mould thrives on.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. After cleaning, wipe down the area with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) to disinfect. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem. The damp feeling you describe is the real issue. Simply cleaning the mould will result in it returning unless you solve the condensation. Move your bed away from the wall to improve air circulation. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature and that its filters are clean. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during more humid periods, can help measurably reduce the ambient moisture that fuels mould growth. Given that the spots are "spreading," a professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning can often disturb mould, releasing spores into the air and spreading the problem. A certified inspector can identify the exact mould species and, more importantly, use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the source of the dampness—whether it's condensation, a hidden pipe leak, or compromised insulation. Their remediation plan will focus on correcting the moisture source first, then safely removing the contaminated materials. For a permanent solution, especially in a sleeping area, this targeted approach is the most effective. |
