Black mold in bedroom corner - treat it safely in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. The room has felt a bit damp lately, even with the AC on, and I'm worried it's gotten worse since the heavy humidity last week. Is this definitely mold, and what's the best way to get it treated properly in Dubai without getting scammed?

Based on your description of black spots spreading behind the wardrobe in a damp-feeling bedroom, this is highly indicative of a mold colony, likely triggered by the recent high humidity. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity meets year-round air conditioning, condensation is a common cause. The wall behind a large piece of furniture like a wardrobe is a classic problem area, as air circulation is severely restricted, creating a microclimate where moisture accumulates and mold thrives.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended for several reasons. First, visual inspection alone cannot determine the species; what appears as common "black mold" could be Stachybotrys chartarum (which requires specific remediation protocols) or a less hazardous type. Second, and most critically, we must identify and rectify the precise moisture source. It could be condensation from the AC unit, a tiny plumbing leak within the wall, or capillary rise from a compromised damp proof course. Treatment is ineffective until the source is eliminated.

For safe and effective remediation, do not attempt to clean it with bleach. This can aggravate the spores and does not address the root cause. UAE regulations and best practices, such as those outlined by the Dubai Municipality, require proper containment, HEPA filtration air scrubbing, and the use of specialized biocides to ensure spores are not spread throughout your home during the process.
