Black mold in bedroom: DIY bleach or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s right above the window and seems worse since the humidity kicked in last month. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

That black spot pattern above your window is a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, extremely common in Dubai's high humidity. The wall-ceiling corner is a thermal bridge where cooler indoor temperatures meet the warmer exterior, creating a perfect damp environment for mold.

Using supermarket bleach is not recommended. It's mostly water, which can feed mold roots deep in porous surfaces like drywall or paint. Bleach also only addresses surface discoloration and releases problematic fumes without solving the moisture source.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a simple solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub gently, dry the area immediately, and improve ventilation. However, since this is recurring in your bedroom and likely stems from condensation around the window frame, the root cause needs addressing.

Professional assessment is strongly advised in this case. The mold has returned, indicating a persistent moisture issue. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to identify the exact condensation points and thermal leaks, often around the window installation itself. They can also take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, which is important for determining the correct remediation protocol, especially if it's in a sleeping area. This climate makes DIY fixes temporary; solving the condensation is the only permanent solution.
