Black mold in bedroom: DIY bleach or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these dark, fuzzy black patches spreading along the corner where our bedroom wall meets the ceiling. The room has felt damp lately, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something we can tackle ourselves with bleach from the supermarket, or do we need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially with the symptoms you describe, requires careful handling. The damp feeling and your husband's stuffy nose are common indicators of a mold-related indoor air quality issue. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use can create condensation in poorly insulated areas, this is a frequent problem.

Using supermarket bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall. It only bleaches the visible surface mold and does not kill the roots penetrating the material. The water content in bleach can also worsen the problem by feeding the mold deep within the wall, causing it to return more aggressively.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach using a dedicated mold remover or a vinegar solution can be attempted, with strict safety precautions including an N95 mask, gloves, and sealing the area. However, given that the mold is spreading along the ceiling-wall junction—a classic sign of a potential condensation or leak issue—and is affecting health, a professional inspection is strongly advised.

Professionals can identify the precise moisture source, often a leaking AC duct in the ceiling void, poor external wall insulation, or a hidden pipe leak, which is critical to prevent recurrence. They will also contain the area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during remediation. For health safety and a permanent solution, a professional assessment is the most reliable course of action.
