Black mold in bedroom: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled back the wardrobe to find a patch of black mold on the wall behind it. It’s been there a while, maybe since the last round of heavy humidity. I’m worried about our health but also don’t want to call a professional if it’s something I can safely clean with bleach myself. Is this a DIY job or do I need to get a proper mold remediation company in?

Discovering black mold behind your wardrobe in a Mirdif villa is a serious concern that warrants immediate and careful attention. Given Dubai's high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning, which can lead to significant condensation issues, mold growth is a common problem, particularly on cooler external walls hidden behind furniture.

This is not a simple DIY job. The visible patch is often just the "fruit" of a larger fungal colony growing within the wall cavity or plaster. Applying bleach is highly discouraged; it is primarily a bleaching agent, not a fungicide. It will remove the visible discoloration but leave the root structure intact, causing the mold to return. More critically, bleach is mostly water, which can feed further mold growth deep within porous materials like drywall and concrete. Disturbing the colony during cleaning can also aerosolize harmful mycotoxins and spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a significant health risk through inhalation.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is mandatory. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the humidity—be it a condensation cold bridge, a minor pipe leak, or rising damp—and assess the full extent of the contamination. The remediation process we employ involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the use of specialized, EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root.

To properly diagnose the cause and ensure it is safely and permanently eradicated, I strongly recommend you call our team for a comprehensive assessment. Please contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
