Black mold in bedroom: DIY clean or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold spreading along the corner where our bedroom wall meets the ceiling, probably from the AC condensation. It's in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park and seems to be getting bigger. I’m worried about our health and the damage it’s causing. For a job like this in a villa, should I just try to clean it myself with bleach or is it worth getting professional quotes, and what’s a rough cost I should expect for a proper remediation?

A patch spreading along the ceiling-wall junction from an AC drip is a common issue in Dubai's humidity. For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach can be attempted. However, this specific scenario often requires professional assessment because the visible growth is frequently just the fruiting body; the actual moisture problem and root structure may be deeper inside the wall or AC system.

Bleach is not recommended. It can remove surface discoloration but often fails to kill the root structure of mold growing on porous materials like drywall. More importantly, it poses respiratory risks in an enclosed space like a bedroom. A better DIY solution is a diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent, scrubbing thoroughly and ensuring the area is completely dried. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source—likely an AC condensate drain line blockage or a leak in the ductwork above.

Given the location in your bedroom and the ongoing spread, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Proper remediation involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the villa, safe removal of affected porous materials if necessary, and HEPA vacuuming to clear the air. The final cost for a proper job is variable, as it depends entirely on the extent of the contamination behind the wall. Expect to request multiple assessments; reputable providers will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to determine the true scope before offering a solution, not just a surface clean.
